To become a Buddhist is to take refuge in the Three Jewels, also called the Three Treasures or the Three Refuges.
 

The Three Jewels are

  • the Buddha (The Teacher)
  • the Dharma (The Teaching), and the
  • Sangha (The Buddhist Community).
